Junior Exchange & Five Club

Junior Exchange 2016

We had a very successful program in 2016 with Juniors traveling in both directions.

The NAS Junior Exchange Program

The North American Station of the Royal Scandinavian Yacht Clubs and Nyländska Jaktklubben sponsors a summer exchange program that allows young sailors from Scandinavia to sail and race in America and young Americans to sail and race in Scandinavia. We invite junior sailors, age 15-18, to apply for the opportunity to live with a family for approximately two weeks during the summer, to sail on foreign waters, and to spend time with Scandinavian or American teens with whom they share the common interest of sailing.

Since the 1950s, this informal program has allowed hundreds of junior sailors to travel to or from a Scandinavian country, live with a local family, and participate in the sailing life of the community. The NAS and Home Clubs make introductions - details are agreed between the Exchange Juniors and Host Families. In the US, members of Riverside YC, Noroton YC, American YC, Larchmont YC, Indian Harbor YC, Head of Bay YC, Ida Lewis YC, Manchester YC and Seawanhaka Corinthian YC have participated in the Exchange Program. The Scandinavian clubs are the Royal Gothenburg YC (GKSS), the Royal Swedish YC (KSSS, in Stockholm), the Royal Norwegian YC (KNS, in Oslo), the Royal Danish YC (KDY, near Copenhagen) and Nyländska Jaktklubben (NJK, in Helsinki Finland).

Five Club Regatta

The Five Club Regatta is held annually with participation by the Home Clubs and The NAS. Its location rotates among the Home Clubs and The NAS. "Five Club" or "5C" started almost fifty years ago among the present Home Clubs as a regatta for Juniors, typically aged 14-17. The NAS commenced participation in 2008 and hosted the event in Newport in 2009, 2012 and 2015. KNS hosted Five Club in Oslo in 2016. The future schedule is:

  • 2017 - KSSS in Stockholm
  • 2018 - KDY near Copenhagen

Five Club was not held in 2014. In 2013, Five Club was hosted by NJK in Helsinki. The NAS was represented by a team of four young sailors: Singne Brown, Sylvia Skerry, George Moss, and Julian DelGuidice. They sailed a J80 and did a great job on this difficult boat. The NAS team placed 3rd overall. Mr. Theo Gustavsson (son of NAS member and Governor Angelica Barrows and a former active KNS-sailor) was their chaperone and coach.
